August

August 6

Completed the Sun page and added it to the Site Map.

Since the Venus page really has only a tiny section completed, removed it from the Site Map site in general -- it's better to have a 404 error than to have a page on Venus that's all about Mercury. Repeated this for two other pages (Ceres, Foundations - Planetary Surface Processes).

Updated the About page.

The pages that have partial information that are top-top priority to complete are: Foundations - Light, Asteroids, Earth's Moon, and Mercury.

Created Error 400, 401, 403, 404, and 500 pages so as to not use the default from the hosting service.

August 3

Examined the 404 error logs for the past year to determine what pages that have not yet been created should be the top priority. In order of priority, these are: Sun, main planets landing page, H-R diagram, nebulae, "dead" stars, and Neptune. Also fixed a link to the Feedback page from the main index page (had .html instead of .php ending in the link).

Started the Sun page.

Commented out a few extra sections on the Mercury page that had not been finished. At the moment, the priority is to actually complete the pages that were started but not finished, then work on the Sun etc. pages.

January 15, 2009

Completed the Beyond Neptune page, added it to the Site Map, and added its new definitions to the Glossary.

Added a new bullet type that has a Quicktime image as the bullet to indicate movie downloads.

Tracked down a pesky script bug that would cause loading errors on all pages.

Added a little more information to Mars' moons, finishing that page and fixing two type-o's. For some reason, my original site seems to have gotten over 300 hits for the page on Mars' moons in the first 2 weeks of January, and it appears on the first page of a Google search on "Mars moons."

Tweeked the Feedback Form and the output results. Also added a direct e-mail link. Over a dozen people have landed on the Feedback page, but for some reason no one's sent anything.

January 14, 2009

Completed the landing page for the Dead Stars section and added it to the Site Map.

Decided to condense the proposed separate pages for the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud into just one "Beyond Neptune" page.

Created the Beyond Neptune page.

Even though most pages are not in place yet, fixed several broken links to ones that are or will be.

January 13, 2009

Completed Particle Physics Overview page.

Started and completed page on Variable Stars (did this one because it had one of the highest 404 errors). Also re-created the cataclysmic variable illustration. Added to Site Map.

Updated Glossary with newest definitions that were added.

Started and completed page on Stellar Birth (did this one because it had one of the highest 404 errors). Also re-created the pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks illustration. Added to Site Map.

Completed the landing page for the Stellar Types & the H-R Diagram section and added it to the Site Map.

Alphabatised definitions on Finding Exoplanets and the Asteroids page.

Created the robots.txt file because I was getting a lot of 404 errors recorded by bots searching for it.

Completed a feedback form that actually works. Uses PHP to send e-mail and has complete validation. The form was originally found online but it was heavily altered by me.

Added two images to the Pluto page.

Added a boldRed type to the CSS.

Made a few tweaks to the Feedback page, the biggest changes being applying the boldRed style to the required fields, changing the comment type to a radio button, and changing the subject line of the e-mail that's sent to me.

Added browser compatability information to main Home page.

Completed page on Pluto's moons.

Completed page on the dwarf planet Eris.

Created and completed page on the Venera program.

Added a little more information to the main Home page, couching it in terms of "What We Know" and "How We Know What We Know."

Created and completed main landing page on Dwarf Planets, including the data table.

Purchased a domain name and hosting service through "Host Monster" and worked on configuring the site.

Registered site with Google and created the Home > Search page. Also verified I'm the site owner with Google by uploading the index.html page with a META tag (later removed the tag).

Found and installed a PHP Counter system ... for the moment, this requires that the index page end in a .php extension, which for some reason breaks the date modified script on that page.

Altered the CSS for the menu bar to add vertical padding between menu items so they are clearer when line-wrapped. This caused a "feature" in where to make the space between the lines the background color, there is a small bar of that color below each menu item regardless of whether it is active or not, even though the height is "forced" to be 19 px it goes to 24 (19+5 padding). Adjusted the menubar background to be 24 px to compensate, but that won't work for the roll-over menu items.

Continued work on Earth's Moon page.

Did a small browser test in Firefox and had to make several changes:

For main menu bar, altered images to have a specified border=0.

Even though tables for images were specified as white, Firefox still displayed an outline so altered to have border=0 but cellspace=15, and then altered the figurecaption CSS from 20 px top padding to 5, bottom to 5, and right and left from 15 to 25.

Altered code to change drop-down navigation to colors based upon the section of the site.

Decided to include a page on "Light" to the Extras > Foundations of Astronomy section.

Decided to move the two star clusters pages (open and globular) from Cosmos > Our Galaxy to the Stars section of the site.

July 20, 2008

Created landing page and established "Sub-Sections" bar for the "Extras" section of the site.

Added the "About this Site" page, copying "Initial Site and Subsequent Expansion" from the previous version of the site.

Decided to create the Extras > "Foundations of Astronomy" section under which the "Particle Physics Overview" was placed and added the "Planetary Surface Modification Processes" page.

Began work on the Solar System > Planets > Mercury page, creating the basic sections of a Solar System > Planets page, and filling in the information for "Observing from Earth," Global History," "Atmosphere," "Magnetosphere," some of the "Selected Features & Characteristics," "Naming Conventions, "Plast, Present, & Future Missions," and "Data for the Planets." The data table was copied from the previous version of the site, but it was modified to look more modern and have intratable separations to better breakup the information.

Decided to make the "active" column of the table (e.g., Mercury's in this case) a red glow instead of colored text.
